Public Planter is a small press toolbox and developmental consultancy offering free tutorials via the Public Planter Publishing Podcast and paid consultancies for small presses, individuals/groups thinking of starting a small press, literary cultural producers of events or festivals, or larger literary organizations.
My developmental editing services (at the stage of a manuscript’s final draft) offer writers deep reviews of big-picture story elements, including alignment, sentence phrasing, pacing, intent and message, and consistency of voice to assist the writer in ensuring there is a natural and understandable flow to the manuscript. Copy editing (e.g. grammar, sentence structure, line editing) is not included within the scope of this work.
The Podcast
The Public Planter Publishing Podcast is for small press publishers (existing or inspiring). It offers nuts-and-bolts information (for instance: how do I buy an ISBN, how does distribution work, what is the best program to design books with and how much does it cost?) as well as a philosophical framework for exploring the intentional creation of space and place on the page and stage. The Podcast is sponsored by Nomadic Foundation.

Publishing is an opaque industry and it can be quite overwhelming to learn the ins and outs of the industry and what makes sense for your particular publishing house or project. The Public Planter Publishing Consultancy is for small presses, individuals/groups thinking of starting a small press, literary cultural producers of events or festivals, or larger literary organizations that may have questions as they just start out or are facing challenges as a preexisting organization. These are paid sessions of curiosity, deep listening, and reflection that bring us to client-derived solutions. Topics can range from nuts-and-bolts questions to cultural framework creation (community standards statements, for instance) to philosophical and sociological questions of building representative publishing platforms, whether that is on the page or the stage.
